Advances and challenges on the in vitro production of secondary metabolites from medicinal plants Horticultura Brasileira
Cardoso,Jean Carlos; Oliveira,Maria Eduarda BS de; Cardoso,Fernanda de CI.
ABSTRACT The production of secondary metabolites from medicinal plants, also called Plant-Derived Medicinal Compounds (PDMC), is gaining ground in the last decade. Concomitant to the increase in the knowledge about pharmacological properties of these compounds, horticultural plants are becoming the most important, sustainable and low-cost biomass source to obtain high-complex PDMCs to be used as medicaments. Biotechnological tools, including plant cell and tissue culture and plant genetic transformation, are increasingly being employed to produce high quality and rare PDMC under in vitro conditions. The proper use of these technologies requires studies in organogenesis to allow for better control of in vitro plant development and, thus, to the production...

Efficiency of snake sampling methods in the Brazilian semiarid region Anais da ABC (AABC)
Mesquita,Paulo C.M.D.; Passos,Daniel C.; Cechin,Sonia Z..
The choice of sampling methods is a crucial step in every field survey in herpetology. In countries where time and financial support are limited, the choice of the methods is critical. The methods used to sample snakes often lack objective criteria, and the traditional methods have apparently been more important when making the choice. Consequently researches using not-standardized methods are frequently found in the literature. We have compared four commonly used methods for sampling snake assemblages in a semiarid area in Brazil. We compared the efficacy of each method based on the cost-benefit regarding the number of individuals and species captured, time, and financial investment. We found that pitfall traps were the less effective method in all...

Histological processing techniques for the study of Dugesiidae development (Platyhelminthes, Tricladida, Paludicola) BJB
VARA,D. C. da; LEAL-ZANCHET,A. M.; LIZARDO-DAUDT,H. M..
The objective of the present study was to adapt techniques for the histological processing of Dugesiidae cocoons for the study of embryo development. The cocoons were fixed with formalin, SUSA, Bouin or paraformaldehyde/glutaraldehyde and subsequently embedded in Paraplast or glycol methacrylate (Historesin). Paraplast embedding yielded reasonable results only after the cocoon was perforated or fixed for a prolonged period of time using softening techniques with acid solutions. When the SUSA or Bouin fixative and Historesin embedding techniques were used the results were good for light microscopical analysis. Fixation with paraformaldehyde/glutaraldehyde and glycol methacrylate embedding resulted in better tissue preservation, and did not require prolonged...

Microplastics in sediments: A review of techniques, occurrence and effects ArchiMer
Van Cauwenberghe, Lisbeth; Devriese, Lisa; Galgani, Francois; Robbens, Johan; Janssen, Colin R..
Microplastics are omnipresent in the marine environment and sediments are hypothesized to be major sinks of these plastics. Here, over 100 articles spanning the last 50 year are reviewed with following objectives: (i) to evaluate current microplastic extraction techniques, (ii) to discuss the occurrence and worldwide distribution of microplastics in sediments, and (iii) to make a comprehensive assessment of the possible adverse effects of this type of pollution to marine organisms. Based on this review we propose future research needs and conclude that there is a clear need for a standardized techniques, unified reporting units and more realistic effect assessments.

Module Argenton : écloserie - nursery. Bilan 1976 ArchiMer
Flassch, Jean-pierre; Aveline, Charles.

On-Farm Benchmarking: How to Do It and How to Do It Better AgEcon
Franks, J.R.; Collis, Jimi.
Benchmarking is the practice of establishing the relative performance of a business or enterprise against an appropriate standard, generally industry standards derived from a survey of farms. The Policy Commission into the Future of Farming and Food (2002) highlighted a need to spread and improve benchmarking on farms. The requirements of effective benchmarking are illustrated in a ten step framework. The ten steps illustrate the range of expertise and resources a manager requires before being able to justify allocating resources to benchmarking. A comparison of alternative farm surveys and methodologies used to collect, analyse and report industry standards illustrates the difficulties farmers can have in identifying appropriate, robust and accurate...
